History of Lislee

The existence of a church at Lislee Temple can be traced back to the 16th Century. In 1591 William Moyran appears as Rector and John Heyes as Vicar of Lislee. In  1615 and 1699, according to church records, the church at Lislee was in good repair. In 1805 a glebe house was in contemplation. The Rector was not yet resident. In 1811 construction was approved and in December 1813 Mr Henry Jones, the Vicar, obtained a certificate for an outlay of £1,036. 4. 10d of which £750 was lent by the Board of First Fruits. Lislee Glebe House was fit for residence in 1814 having actually cost £1,048. 16. 9 1/4d The house was built in classical Georgian style and it was integrated into an existing farm house dating from the 16th Century which has old flagstone floors and remnants of a Priests' Hole.

In 1825 James Stewart became Vicar of Lislee and in September 1827 he obtained approval to sink a pump at Lislee. In 1831 expenditure thereon was Certified by the Bishop for £97. 8. d. Also in 1831 the new church at Lislee was finished, replacing the old parish church. The new church accommodated 200 persons and was built by means of a loan of £830.15. 41/4qd granted by the Board of First Fruits. In 1860 James Stewart reported the church and glebe house in thorough repair. 42 acres of land were in the Vicar's use, the average communicants was 28, the Protestant population was 249.

In 1889 James Walter Forde became Rector. The church population was then 160. In 1891 the parish church was entirely remodelled and restored internally.

Among his many duties Reverend Forde was Honorary Secretary to the Courtmacsherry branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Ireland from 1901 to 1925. On 7th May he received a message that a large steamer was sinking about 12 miles off the Seven Heads and help was required. He alerted the Coxswain and Crew of the local lifeboat 'Kezia Gwilt' at Barry's Point where the lifeboat was stationed. On their way to the wreck, unusually accompanied by Rev. Forde, as they pulled as hard as they could on their oars, they met several boats crammed with survivors and learned that it was the 'Lusitania' which had been torpedoed off the coast of Ireland by a German submarine.

In 1943 it is said that a German mine washed up on Broadstrand and exploded, shattering all the windows of Lislee house.

The Rectors of Lislee Church continued to live at Lislee House until the Rev. Cyril du Cros left on the 8th of May 1943. The Glebe house and lands were then sold to Mr. John Smith of Broadstrand. The Church at Lislee continued until 1964 when it was unroofed and dismantled a few years later. The graveyard is still in use today.

For some years Mr. Robinson and his wife lived in Lislee House, providing holiday accommodation and opening a small market gardening operation.

In April 1967 the house and some 10 acres of land were sold to Sir Douglas and Lady Bruce-Gardner who made many changes to the house. On the 6th of February 1973 Michael and Gwen Lees bought the property, operating a thriving and well known soft fruit farm. They created traditional style holiday cottages and apartments from the old stone buildings around Lislee House. The fruit farm closed in 1992 and the property was sold in 1993 to the present owners Edmund and Auriol Ironside.

The current emphasis is on the provision of a peaceful and tranquil environment for the holiday guests staying in the cottages and apartments and the development of organically grown fruit, herbs and vegetables in the old walled gardens for these guests to eat and enjoy while they are at Lislee County Cork Ireland.
